Ballistics: Wounding Mechanisms of Firearms

Abstract
The immediate, delayed, and remote effects of firearms injury are interest to the military and civilian physicians. Information about ballistics wound management, and potential complications is widely scattered in sporting, forensic, medical and
military literature.
Generally speaking, the higher the impact velocity, the greater the amount of injured tissue. However decisions as to treatment must be based upon a knowledge of the mechanism of injury and an ability to correlate various technical parameters to
the
ensuing medical events.
This note reviews the ballistic behaviors about the three major weapons which most commonly produce gunshot wound(rifles, shotguns, and handguns) following evaluation of military and medical reports.
